What to do in Maputo:

Economy

Mozambique has many natural resources, in addition to a huge agricultural potential. Its economy is based on agriculture, but the industrial sector lies in a huge growth, in particular with regard to the production of food products, beverages, chemicals, aluminium and oil. The country’s tourism sector is also experiencing growth.

South Africa is the main trade partner to Mozambique and the main source of foreign direct investment. The average annual economic growth rate of the Mozambican GDP has been one of the highest of the world since 2001.  In 2012, huge reserves of natural gas were discovered in Mozambique, whose revenues may dramatically change the country’s economy.

Arts and Culture

Mozambique is acknowledged by its plastic artists: sculptors (mainly from the Makonde ethnics) and painters (inclusive in fabric, the batik technique). Artists like Malangatana and Reinata stand out in painting and ceramics, respectively. Music also deserves special acknowledgement:timbilachope has been proclaimed as intangible heritage by UNESCO in 2006.

The Makonde and Nyau ethnics are famous for their masks and crafts made from wood, which are generally used in traditional dances. The Island of Mozambique, an insular territory located in the northern province of Nampula, was proclaimed the world heritage by UNESCO in 1991.  The most popular religion in Mozambique is Christianity, but there is a significant presence of Islamic followers.
